Stephen Frear’s sensitive drama follows the relationship between Omar and Johnny, two working-class men in London who must battle the restrictions of 1980’s society when they embark on a romance. Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis stars.
Heralded as one of the best British films of all time, Stephen Frear’s funny, moving and ultimately poignant drama is a must-see for every film fan. Released in 1985, the film’s aesthetic might have dated but the subject matter hasn’t, with Frear’s fusing social and political themes with laugh out loud comedy.
Culturally significant, the film successfully explores the British working class, while portraying the relationship between two men that society dictates is wrong. Perhaps as relevant now as it was then, critics and audiences adore it.
It’s also a delight to see a young Daniel Day-Lewis put in a star performance before turning his attention to Hollywood roles.
